Ignite-Sparks

Week 5

Messages from Mrs. Wedad

First and foremost, I want to extend sincere thanks to Ignite Parents for your tremendous support over the past 4 weeks. I am especially appreciative of everything that you have done to support learning at school and from home.  Your input for continuous improvement and an effective school environment is truly valued. Ignite PTA, held their first meeting on Thursday, Sept 30th to welcome returning and new parents to the organization. The participation was fantastic and promising. Loads of thanks to Ms. Heba, PTA President, and Ms. Jaida VP and Board Member as well as all newly appointed PTA officers.

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank, once again, all Ignite Staff who have continued to work exceptionally hard to ensure that the students were able to make a smooth transition to face-to-face learning and settle quickly into their daily routines.

This year, we have started our DSIB Journey titled Good to Better. As I shared during my morning coffee with parents last Monday, you will have an important role in this journey, and we will be sure to involve you and keep you posted.

We continue to be very impressed by everyone’s support and are confident in achieving a very successful and fun school year for all.

In the United States of America, where the trees change colors in the Fall, there is a saying that: October is about trees revealing colors they’ve hidden all year. People have an October as well! In the UAE, where the weather starts to get cooler and more comfortable, what will the change of the season reveal about your child? This October, we look forward to developing your child’s sometimes hidden gifts, talents, and abilities!

I cannot believe how quickly the month has gone by us! Five weeks of teaching and learning already. Where has the time gone?

We have grown in Middle School this month, not just in the numbers of scholars, but the staff and in our learning practices. We will welcome Mr. Ken on October 4, 2021. He is our new US Social Studies teacher coming to teach Grades 7 and 8 US History, and 2 classes of Digital Citizenship. We have Mr. Wasfi who joined us this week as our Positive Behavior Supports person as well. Classrooms have blossomed in terms of engagement and seeing scholar work displayed inside and outside classrooms for #MakingThinkingVisible. In fact, I got to ‘See It Live’ today in one Science classroom where scholars were proud to share their simple production in a short skit on Gravity and then in the Science lab where there was rich academic discourse as scholars explained their learning objective and their hypothesis with metals, magnets, attraction and repelling.

IS YOUR MENTAL HEALTH, HEALTHY?

What is Mental Health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Over the course of your life, if you experience mental health problems, your thinking, mood, and behavior could be affected. Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including:
•           Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry
•           Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse

Mental health problems are common, but help is available. People with mental health problems can get better and many recover completely.

Ignite Curriculum

As a school that follows the American Curriculum, we have a standards-based curriculum. These standards are broken down into learning outcomes and success criteria. Our curriculum focus for the next couple of weeks is communicating learning outcomes and success criteria to students.  Research shows that when students understand what and why they are learning, they are more invested in the outcome.  Additionally, it shifts the responsibility of learning from the teacher to the student.

Here is what you can expect to see in Ignite classrooms:

  • Learning outcomes are posted in every classroom.
  • Teachers begin and end the lesson with a reference to the learning outcomes.
  • Teachers help students reflect on their learning to understand what they need to do to meet the learning outcomes and success criteria.
